Africa and the African Union The UN Security Council issued a press statement voicing “deep concern at the continuing escalation of violence in Burundi and noted the decision of the AU Peace and Security Council decision to deploy an African Prevention and Protection Mission in Burundi (MAPROBU). The Peace and Security Council invoked the clause in the AU Constitutive Act, Article 4 (h) providing for sending troops to a member country under circumstances of war crime, genocide or crimes against humanity. Africa and the Africa Union The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on Tuesday (December 15) announced the formation of an alliance of 34 mainly Muslim countries against terrorism and extremism. Among the countries included are Benin, Chad, Togo, Tunisia, Djibouti, Senegal, Sudan, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Gabon, Guinea, the Comoros, Ivory Coast, Libya, Mali, Egypt, Morocco, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria and Yemen.
Africa and the African Union The Paris Climate Change Conference (COP 21), due to end on Friday (December 11), entered its most intensive phase on Wednesday and Thursday this week with negotiators moving towards a strong climate change agreement over keeping the temperature rise in check and avoiding dangerous global warming. The problem of translating political goodwill into the language of diplomatic agreement remained.
