State Minister Hirut holds talks with Bintou Keita Deputy Joint Special Representative for UNAMID

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Hirut Zemene held discussions with Ms. Bintou Keita, Deputy Joint Special Representative (DJSR) for  UNAMID at her office on Wednesday (November 1). Commending UNAMID for its unrelenting efforts to bring peace and stability in Darfur, State Minister Hirut added Ethiopia will continue reinforcing its strategic partnership with neighboring countries and maintaining the peace and stability in the region through regional mechanisms. Mentioning Ethiopia as the top troop-contributing countries in UNAMID by providing 2414 strong forces on the ground, the State Minister reiterated her Government's strong commitment to support the ongoing efforts to bring long-lasting peace in Darfur.
In her part Ms. Bintou Keita expressed her appreciation to the government of Ethiopia for its exemplary role in peacekeeping operations and conflict prevention activities in the region and the continent as whole, adding herself being a witness for the remarkable discipline Ethiopia troops exhibited in helping and protecting civilians and providing humanitarian assistance in south Darfur.
The African Union/UN hybrid operation in Darfur was formally established by the Security Council on 31 July 2007 through the adoption of resolution 1769, referred to by its acronym UNAMID, under Chapter VII of the UN Charter.
