Senator Inhofe leads a US delegation to Ethiopia
A U.S. delegation led by Republican Senator James Inhofe visited Ethiopia last week, and held talks with Prime Minister Hailemariam.
The Prime Minister expressed Ethiopia`s desire to further strengthen its relations with the new administration of the United States particularly in trade and investment.
He noted that Ethiopia and the U.S. enjoyed a longstanding relationship and urged the U.S. to enhance trade and investment cooperation with Ethiopia in general and to develop the African Growth Opportunity Act (AGOA) in particular.
AGOA is a United States Trade Act, enacted seventeen years ago as Public Law 106 of the 200th Congress. The legislation enhances market access to the US for qualifying Sub-Saharan African countries. It has been extended to 2025. The Prime Minister also highlighted the need for strong support from the U.S. to build the country's resilience to the impacts of climate change including the current drought in parts of the country.
Senator Inhofe told reporters after the discussion that the U.S would continue to cooperate with Ethiopia and.
Senator Inhofe described Ethiopia as an ally of the US in the area of security in the Horn of Africa region, and assured the Prime Minister that relations would be further strengthened under President Trump.
Senator Inhofe, who serves on the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce Science, and Transportation and the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship said the US will continue provide support for peace and security efforts by Ethiopia, particularly in Somalia and South Sudan and for the efforts to stabilize the Horn of Africa.
