WHEN THE DUST IS SETTLED

By ETHIO-CANADIANS IN ETHIOPIA

Ups and downs are common during electoral campaign for political power. Political contesters and their followers often involve in an unprecedented rang lings, fierce debates and at times nasty name callings simply to outsmart and outran their political challengers or opponents. Sometimes, the contest gets out of hand and those who are less oriented about the purpose of politics often make regrettable mistakes by making it more personal than political. Those who are more professional and experienced with the purpose of political campaign play it safely following the rules and regulations of the political game,. They follow the political process, respect the political judge that makes the ultimate decision and more often than not win and come to power through the proper channel. Although following the rule of the game can not guarantee victory, they know win or loose that is the only right and legal way of playing the game. They know in advance that the game should be played in a free, fair, and democratic manner strictly following the law of the land. They do so because they understand clearly that they are doing that primarily to serve their people in parliament where they can represent their constituencies and fulfill the will of the people who cast their votes for them. Further, they understand and comprehend that through a free, fair and democratic process, they are exercising their citizenship rights and responsibilities on the one hand to serve the people at large and to contribute their share in advancing democracy and good governance in Ethiopia on the other. Political campaigners who follow the above trend are genuine politicians who care for the welfare of ordinary citizens and are ready to help in advancing the electoral process thereby contributing to the development of a civilized and peaceful process of democratization in the country. On the other hand however, there are individuals and groups with different personal and political agenda contrary to those mentioned above. These people have different comprehension of political power, the electoral process and political challenges and political competition. The number one priority of these people is to grasp power by any and every means including through violence. If they can not grasp power through peaceful means, then they are ready to do whatever they can including via illegal activities simply to put themselves and their groups to power. They ran here and there knocking every door and spreading their propaganda machines internally and externally in order to rightly or wrongly convinces the public at large that they are the only ones who could be trusted in power. If that is not enough, they go anywhere to convince or rather mislead people in order to collect exorbitant amount of money to fill their empty wallets in the name of politics. Few become very rich as a result. This phenomenon has been evident with few opposition political leaders that have accumulated millions of dollars from innocent citizens from within and the Diaspora with false hopes and fake promises. It has now become a public knowledge that innocent business people mainly from Merkato and some wealthy business men from Addis and the Diaspora were promised by some leadership of the opposition that they will financially and politically benefit and profit if the opposition comes to power. This false dream was intended to mislead innocent citizens and tax-payers but helped collect “easy money” that made the wallets of few individuals and groups of the opposition very fat. These people do not have an external or internal financial auditor to account them responsible for using or rather misusing innocent citizens’ and tax-payers’ money. As a result, few of the opposition leadership were laughing to the bank with their fat wallets. Consequently, they are now instant millioners and few have became very rich from nothing and since that was their number one agenda, one can say they did not do badly at all in that regard. That kind of game is their political game. This doesn’t look like public service at all; rather it has to do a lot with fast money collection under the cover of political campaign. Further, this has no attachment with the above mentioned care for public service or fulfillment of citizenship rights and responsibilities in representing those who cast their votes for them thinking that they will advance their citizenship dreams and aspirations. Too bad, these people did not live-up to the aspirations of these innocent citizens because that has not been the primary agenda of these individuals and groups; as said, the agenda of the day was simply to satisfy their financial and ego desire quickly and yes they were very successful in doing so. The problem is not they collecting money from within, the Diaspora and from many international governmental as well as non-governmental organizations alike in the name of political campaign; it is their intention to continue with illegal, un-constitutional and un-civilized activities to extend the process in order to collect yet more money for their wallet. Lawlessness and anarchy often works perfectly all right for their primary agenda i.e. collecting money quick. Peace, stability and the rule of law is not their priority because the presence of such an environment is not conducive for them to confuse, mislead and collect money from within and the Diaspora illegally, sporadically and in a short cut.  For these people, there is one thing in their minds and that is to win at any cost and if winning comes peacefully, then they echo peace and democracy; however, when it is evident that they are bound to loose, then they opt for violence to advance their agenda of “win at any cost”. In politics, one has to win and the other has to loose and that is the way things go. When the verdict is declared by the electoral board, the winner celebrates victory and the loser waits until next time for another chance. That is how democracy works in a democratic nation. At the end of the day, when the dust is settled, winner and looser their differences and focus on the business of the nation and go back to work shaking hands and congratulating each other for a good job i.e. for advancing democracy and the rule of law in their nation and for serving their citizens. The May 15 election in Ethiopia was intended to reflect this democratic practice and it has done so to a great extent. There were some unfortunate incidents and unnecessary innuendos by the opposition to disrupt this democratic exercise on the road. This is to be expected in a country that never had democratic elections for generations. This can not be an excuse for not respecting the rule of law and the constitution of the land and for instigating violence and anarchy in the country however. In any democratic nation, rights and responsibilities go hand in hand and citizens understand them clearly. They follow legal ways and means to advance whatever agendas. They refrain from illegal activities because they clearly understand that illegal and irresponsible means of advancing any agenda is destructive and unacceptable and thus, they always avoid any violent and destructive ways and means that become an obstacle to the socio-economic development of the country. Political parties in developing countries such as ours should learn from countries such as Canada that possess more experience in democratization and good governance. When elections are done in Canada, politicians follow rules and regulations strictly by the book, campaign hard to win voters to their side and when the results are out and the winner is declared, everyone accepts the verdict and when the dust is settled, they shake hands and go back to work. This is a good lesson to every party in Ethiopia.
