Donor Urge Parties to Take Seats in National Assembly

Ambassadors' Donor Group has called up on all parties to take their seats in the National Assembly with good will and mutual respect, to express the interests and views of all Ethiopians in a vibrant multi-party parliament.

 In a statement it issued on September 14,2005 the Group said as Ethiopia's partners, we stand ready to support the development of Ethiopian democracy.

According to the statement, respect for constitutional institutions, commitment to peaceful solutions, freedom of press and dialogue between parties on the key issues of the country are necessary for democracy to grow.

AU Appreciates Observation of Electoral Laws

 The African Union (AU) has confirmed that the election and investigation processes of the third national elections held in Ethiopia were carried out based on the electoral laws of the country.           

The African Union (AU) reported that the legal measures taken by the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) to resolve differences related to May 15 elections based on the constitution was timely and appropriate.

 Meles Refutes Claims of Election Fraud

Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said the findings of the Body that probed into alleged irregularities in the third Ethiopian National Election show that in an overwhelming majority of cases, there were no serious irregularities.

In an interview with CNN television Meles said some people had alleged there were fiddling in the elections and the answer to that was to have a transparent investigation into these alleged fiddling. 

Meles said, "...people have to understand that this is a country that has never had democracy in its history. This is an emerging democracy...We can't be surprised when we have such rough stretches. The issue is how we overcome them and that is the main point."

 Egyptian Foreign Minister Sends Message of Felicitation to Seyoum

 Egyptian Foreign Affairs Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit expressed happiness over the successful completion of the third national election in a message he sent to his Ethiopian counterpart, Seyoum Mesfin.

The Minister said in his message that democracy is taking firm roots in the country.

US Welcomes Conclusion of Ethiopia's Landmark Parliamentary Elections

 The United States welcomes the conclusion of Ethiopia's landmark parliamentary elections, the results of which were certified on September 5 and September 15 conclusions of the Carter Center concerning the credibility of the election, the US State Department said. 

"These elections stand out as a milestone in creating a new, more competitive multi-party political system in one of Africa's most important countries," the State Department said.
