Meles: Effective Health Package Vital for HIV/AIDS Prevention Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said that effective health extension package which makes prevention its one of major task is indispensable for HIV/AIDS prevention. Speaking at the launching of National HIV/AIDS prevention and control strategic plan Meles said the extension of the packager to all rural areas has already been started. He said the strategic plan places high HIV/AIDS prevention at the fane front of the health sector agenda. He under scored that in the next three years this plan will roll out to all to all rural Kebeles. The prevarence of the disease appears to be leveling off in the urban areas of the country while it's increasing in the rural areas from low level, he said, US Global AIDS coordinator Ambassador Randall Lo Tobias on the occasion said the emergency plan focuses on supp supporting capacity of nations. |

Annan Appoints Deputy Special Representative for Ethiopia and Eritrea U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan appointed the ambassador of Benin, Joel Adechi as his deputy representative for the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea, UNMEE. Adechi has been Benin's U.N. Ambassador since 1999 and represents his country in the Security Council. He has been Benin's Ambassador to DRC, the Republic of Congo and Angola, among others. He will join Legwaila Joseph Legwaila, UNMEE special representative of Kofi Annan. |

Harar Joins World Heritage Sites he walled city of Harar is to join the seven Ethiopian world Heritage sites next July. Awad Elhassan, Director and Country Representative of UNESCO to Ethiopia told MoFA Newsletter that UNESCO is supporting Ethiopia's effort in managing and protecting the seven world heritage sites. The inclusion of Harar will take the number to eight. He further indicated UNESCO's ambition to help change the image of Ethiopia abroad by promoting its rich culture and natural heritage. And these riches, he said, could be turned into an economic asset through tourism. While mentioning UNESCO's involvement in the return and reerection of the Axum obelisk, he said that preliminary findings indicated that there seems to be a number of tombs unhampered with under the square in front of the obelisk park in Axum. However, he emphasized on the need to wait for the final report to see the archeological and historical value. In the area of education he said that UNESCO has projects in policy development and capacity building in alternative basic education and preventive education to combat HIV/AIDS. Finally he reaffirmed that in the area of cooperation, which falls within its mandate, UNESCO will continue to work closely with the government at federal, regional and wereda levels in supporting the priorities and needs of Ethiopia. |

Seyoum Confers with Somali PM Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin held discussions in mid-May with Mr.Ali Mohammed Gedi, Prime Minister of the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia on the relocation of the Federal Government to Mogadishu. Seyoum on the occasion reiterated Ethiopia's support to the TFG to bring durable peace in Somalia. Ali Gedi on his part expressed his gratitude for the support extended so far by the government of Ethiopia. Due to the security situation in Mogadishu, he said, the relocation would temporarily be at Jahor, a town 90 km North of Mogadishu. Members of the TFG also indicated during the discussion that the government plans as well to conduct its activities in Mogadishu and Baidowa in its bid to establishing its administration in Somalia. Ali Gedi arrived in Addis on May 12, 2005 to attend the AU Peace and Security Council meeting on the deployment of the Peace Support Mission (PSC) for Somalia. The PSC meeting endorsed the deployment of the Sudanese and Ugandan forces in Somalia. |

Ethiopia Committed to Strengthen Relations with Egypt, Sudan State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr.Tekeda Alemu says Ethiopia is committed to further strengthen its relations with Egypt and Sudan. At a trilateral meeting of Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, on 27 May 2005 Dr.Tekeda reaffirmed Ethiopia's resolve to bolster ties among the countries to a new high. While expressing hope that the three countries would work for further enhancement of cooperation among themselves, Tekeda underscored the contribution of the states to peace and stability in the sub-region as enormously critical. Dr. El-Tigani Salih Fedali, State Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Sudan on his part said the three countries share common geopolitics and economic factors and should invest on these and their huge population. According to Dr.Fedali, there is a very strong political will on the part of the leaders of the three countries to transform the potentials into concrete outputs. Ambassador Hamdi Loza, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt, noted that the meeting would help activate the trilateral relations among the three countries. The leaders and Foreign Affairs Ministers of the three countries have recently met at Sherm-Al-sheikh with a view to further strengthen their cooperation. |

Government to Construct Two Sugar Factories The Ministry of Water Resource Development has announced plans to construct two sugar factories in Tendaho and Kesem at a cost of 1.6 billion birr. Public Relations Department with the Ministry told MoFA Newsletter that Awash and Kesem rivers will be harnessed to provide water for sugarcane plantations on 90,000 hectares of land. The undertaking includes the construction of Kesem and Awash dams to sink 520 million and 2 billion m3 of water respectively. The irrigation scheme and design work will be wrapped up by the end of next Ethiopian fiscal year. The sugar factories, besides boosting foreign currency earnings, will create 100,000 new jobs. |
