March 14, 2005 - The United Nations Security Council decided to extend the mandate of the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) until 15 September 2005. March 18, 2005- Ethiopian peacekeeping contingent in Liberia was bestowed the UN's medal of honour for peacekeeping. March 30, 2005- Ministry of Finance and Economic Development (MoFED) announced that a 1.1 billion USD debt cancellation agreement was signed between Ethiopia and Russia. The agreement was signed by Ethiopian Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Sufian Ahmed, and Russian Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin. April 2,2005- Political parties contesting the upcoming national elections have formed a National Joint Forum to resolve problems they might encounter in the run up to the elections with a sense of tolerance and a civilized manner. April 5, 2005- An international conference was held here in Addis Ababa under the theme " E- Enablement of Ethiopia: Transformation in Africa." April 11, 2005- Regional Assembly of Heads of State and Government for the establishment of Eastern Africa Standby Brigade (EASBRIG) was held in Addis. The establishment of EASBRIG is taken as a major step forward for Africa and the African Union in the area of conflict prevention, management and resolution. April 15, 2005- A group of 52 European Union long-term observers arrived in Ethiopia to engage in election monitoring activities. April 21, 2005- Prime Minister Meles confirms Ethiopia's commitment to do the maximum possible to contribute to the success of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) at a meeting of the COMESA Ministers of Justice and Attorney Generals held in Addis.
