What Happened?

February 24, 2005 - The East African Power Pool (EAPP) which includes nine countries of the region was officially founded here selecting Addis Ababa as its Head Quarter.   

February 25, 2005 - Prime Minister Meles Zenawi confirmed Ethiopia will carry on its support for sustainable peace and reconstruction efforts in the Sudan.  Prime Minister Meles made the pledge during talks with Sudanese Vice President Ali Osman Mohammed Taha, here in Addis.  

March 2, 2005 -  The Governments of Turkey and Ethiopia agreed to further enhance their bilateral relations in various fields. Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan made  the announcement during the latter's visit to Ethiopia.  Turkish Prime Minister paid a two-day official visit at the beginning of March 2005. 

March 9, 2005 - President of the Republic of Kenya, Mwai Kibaki, accompanied by high level government officials made an official visit to Ethiopia between 9th and 12th March 2005.  After talks with Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, both sides expressed their readiness to work together in the spheres of investment, tourism and security.  President Kibaki also addressed Heads of Diplomatic Missions, International Organizations and invited guests at the Headquarters of AU. 

March 10, 2005 - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Seyoum Mesfin, held a consultative meeting with European Ambassadors based in Addis Ababa.  At the meeting, Seyoum briefed the Ambassadors on issues ranging from national to regional affairs.  

March 10, 2005 -  Prime Minister Meles Zenawi has called on members of the Shura Council of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to exert maximum effort to boost cooperation in trade, investment and tourism sectors.   Meles made the call while conferring with President of the Saudi Shura Council, Dr. Saleh Bin Abdellah Bin Humeid. 

March 11, 2005 -  The report of the Commission for Africa was launched simultaneously in Addis Ababa and London.  At the launching ceremony, Prime Minister Meles said that the report is infused with a fundamentally African perspective as it reaffirms Africa's own agenda. 

 What Is in Store?

In April

§         Ministerial Meeting on Transport and the Millennium Development Goals will convene in Addis.

§         Experts Meeting on Early Warning System on Food Security Issues will be held here in the capital.

§         Addis will host meeting of Health Ministers on Trade-Related aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS).

§         Expert and Ministerial Meeting on the Solemn Declaration on Gender Equality in Africa will be held with the participation of all member states.

§         African Union Member States Ministerial Conference on immigration matters convene in Addis.
