Diaspora's Contribution to Ethiopia's Welfare |
|
Diaspora plays an important role in the development of its country of origin. A number of expatriate Ethiopians have returned home and are engaged in various investment activities. Still others are on their way. Newsletter has interviewed a member of the Ethiopian Diaspora now back home with a vision. Newsletter - Shall we start with a brief biography? How did you land in Australia? Yohanes- My name is Yohnes Kahisay. I completed my high school at Atse Yohannes secondary school in Mekele. Thenafter, I studied nursing. I served as a professional in Harar, Somali, Tigray, Gambela regions and the DireDawa Administration. And in 1996 I went to Australia for further studies. While in Australia I took training as a registered nurse in Melbourn, Australia. Newsletter-Why did you return to Ethiopia? Yohanes- Actually, it is not my first time to come to Ethiopia. Three years back I was here to visit my families and look for opportunities to engage in. Even though I am currently living in NewzLand, I have plans to engage on real estate development. Ethiopia is endowed with rich resources. So I want to exploit this chance and help myself, compatriots and my country at large. Therefore I'm looking for areas to invest in. Newsletter- What are your future plans? Yohanes- You know, your country, notwithstanding the level of its development, it's your favorite destination. Therefore, in a few years I would be back to live in Ethiopia. And I don't want to come with empty hands. I want to create opportunities. Newsletter-What is your observation about the ongoing developments in Ethiopia? Yohanes- During my stay in Ethiopia, I have seen for myself that the changes are incredible. Indeed I have come a year after Ethiopia's third democratic elections. Despite the post election turmoil, I happen to see a stable country where huge economic and social development projects are the order of the day. I am quite sure that Ethiopia will register rapid economic development to put poverty behind as history. Newsletter- Do you see incentives that could lure potential investors? Yohanes- I have learnt that Ethiopian Investment Authority has arranged an incentive package to interested investors.
Newsletter-What should be the role of the Ethiopians in the Diaspora in the development of their country? Yohanes- You see in many parts of the world the Diaspora play constructive role in the development of their country. They contribute in augmenting the foreign currency earnings of their country through remittance. Besides, they are instrumental in knowledge and technology transfer. Like wise, I believe, the Ethiopians who live in every corner of the planet, notwithstanding their political differences, should contribute to the development of their country. Newsletter- Thank you very much. Yohanes- It is a great opportunity to be your guest. |
