Ban Ki Moon Announces Plan to Persuade Ethiopia, Eritrea to Resume Negotiations ( May 3 ,2007 )

UN Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon said he would continue efforts to persuade Ethiopia and Eritrea to resume negotiations.

In his report made public on Wednesday, the Secretary General said he would consult with other regional and international partners to push the process further along.

Any efforts to improve relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea can be successful only if they demonstrate the political will necessary to overcome the present stalemate.

The Secretary General also said the UN, and he personally stand ready to assist the parties in their efforts to achieve the full implementation of the Algiers agreements.

He is also considering appointing a new Special representative to head the UN peacekeeping mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE).

Eritrea, according to him, Eritrea is in serious violation of pacts such as the Algiers agreements and the Security Council resolutions due to the ongoing restrictions the government has imposed up on UNMEE.

“These restrictions have further reduced the monitoring capability of the Mission inside the Temporary Security Zone and have impacted very negatively on its capacity to perform its mandated tasks,” the Secretary General said pointing out that UNMEE was originally deployed on the invitation of both parties.
