INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION for MIGRATION

IOM and Ethiopia

  • Ethiopia's and IOM relations started in July 1995 when IOM opened its office in Addis Ababa.
  • IOM signed cooperation and resident office agreement with Ethiopia on February 6, 1997.
  • Ethiopia applied for an observer status to the IOM on March 25, 1998 and was granted the status on May 28, 1998 at the 75th council meeting of IOM.

THE NON-ALIGNED MOVEMENT

Ethiopia and the Non-Alignment Movement

  • One of the founding members of NAM
  • Participated in the 1955 Ban dung and all subsequent conferences
  • Plays an active part to promote the objectives of the Movement
  • Gives emphasis to the efforts of giving renewed impetus to the priority of development cooperation and equitable international economic relations
  • Has an interest to see NAM play a greater role in strengthening the South -South cooperation
  • Strives to get the support of the movement for the initiatives of IGAD in conflict management of the sub-region
  • It is Ethiopia's stand that NAM should carefully examine the changing global situation and try to adjust itself and efficiently face the reality.

THE ORGANIZATION of AFRICAN UNITY/ AFRICAN UNION

Ethiopia and the OAU /AU

  • Through the efforts of Emperor Haile Sellassie of Ethiopia, representing the Monrovia Group of African states, and President Sekou Toure of Guinea, acting on behalf of the Casablanca Group, the leaders of 32 independent African states were brought together at Addis Ababa in May 1963.
  • After two days of speeches, a charter creating the Organization of African Unity (OAU) was approved on 25 May (Africa Day) in Addis Ababa.
  • Ethiopia had a major role in the process of reestablishing the future of pan African organization
  • Ethiopia helped to bring 32 African countries establish the OAU
  • Ethiopia has been actively participating in the meetings of the assembly of heads of state and government and that of the council of ministers
  • Hosted different Assemblies of Heads of State and Government, ordinary and extra ordinary sessions of the council of ministers in the past several years
  • Leaders of Ethiopia were chairmen of the OAU in: - (1966–1967)-Emperor Haile Sellassie
    • (1983–1984)- President Mengistu Haile Mariam
    • (1995–1996). – President Meles Zenawi
  • Has been actively participating in the works of various committees and commissions
  • Ethiopia has played and still playing a pivotal role in the establishment of the mechanism for conflict prevention, management and resolution and has been member of the central organ since the inception
  • Ethiopia has proposed to establish an international panel of eminent personalities to investigate the genocide in Rwanda and the surrounding events
  • Ethiopia is mandated to see the peaceful resolution of the crisis in Somalia
  • Currently Ethiopia is actively participating in Global coalition for Africa as a co-chairman; also is one of the few countries which are working on the new initiative program for Africa called NEPAD Sent peace keeping force to Rwanda
  • Has been member of the sanction review committee on Burundi
  • Actively participated in the establishment process of the African Union

Ethiopia is a member of UNCTAD

  • Ethiopia participates on Regional and International Meetings for Least Developed countries prepared by UNCTAD
  • Ethiopia is beneficiary of different projects financed by UNCTAD
  • Ethiopia gives emphasis for the integrated framework for LDCs trade development
